Top ten search engines
1. Quintura
A new concept for searching the web. Not the regular list of results but a navigation through a tags cloud that makes it so easy to find what you need. You have to try it to see how cool it is. Why can’t Google do so?
2. Clusty
This is a very fast search engine that offers you good results with a bonus: It is also organizing the results in topics so it is easy to find what you need. So if you are searching for ‘London’ you will get a list of results like any other search engine plus a list of categories: Hotels, Photos, Travel etc… Best of the rest.
3. Blinkx
A video, audio and podcasts search engine. They claim to have 14 million hours of video and when you search, you find that it is in fact the case. Best place to look for a video. Blinkx has a great design, not so common with search engines.
4. Answers.com
Not only you get suggestions for the terms you are looking for, you also get a lot of information about the topic you are searching. So if you are looking for ‘London’ you will get a page full of relevant information about the city plus relevant sites. Very handy.
5. Kosmix
Asks you which topic you want to explore and brings you lots of information and sites about the topic. Good if you know what you are looking for.
6. Exalead
Gives you a good tool to narrow the results by relevant topics, site type (blog, forum, language etc…) makes it easier to find what you need.
7. Factbites
The results are not the best, but you get a lot of information about each site, so you don’t need to click on the link and check the website by yourself. This feature is a time saver.
8. Hakia
“Meaning-base” search engine that tries to understand what you meant with your search. We like that the search engines gives you clues about the quality of the results (’tough one’, ‘Did I get it right?’). Still in beta version but looks promising.
9. Congoo
Premium Content search. Brings you all the latest news about any topic. Fast, with nice design, but somehow uninspired.
10. Blackle
The results are from Google, but the background is black which according to the site saves energy. Anyway it looks better than Google…
